Choose the Right Strength
First, you need to choose the right strength for you. Since different smokers are used to different levels of nicotine, NicoDerm CQ comes in three different strengths. What’s right for you depends on how many cigarettes you smoke each day.

Step 1 If you smoke more than 10 cigarettes a day, begin with Step 1 (21 mg) strength. |
Step 2 If you smoke 10 cigarettes or fewer a day, begin with Step 2 (14 mg) strength. |
Step 3 For the final two weeks of your NRT plan use our Step 3 (7 mg) strength to finish strong. |

How to Apply NicoDerm CQ
Once you’ve decided on the step that’s right for you, follow these guidelines to help ensure you use NicoDerm CQ correctly:
- Read the NicoDerm CQ box and the booklet included. They contain important information safety tips and advice on quitting.
- Remember, no cigarettes.
- Set a time to apply your NicoDerm CQ patch. First thing in the morning is best, and putting it on at the same time every day will help you remember.
- Applying your NicoDerm CQ patch is easy: Clean a non-hairy area of skin with non-moisturizing soap and it let it dry completely. Most people apply to their upper arm area, but almost any non-hairy area will work.
- Remove the NicoDerm CQ patch from the foil patch and pull off the plastic liner, one side at a time. Try not to touch the sticky part.
- Press the NicoDerm CQ patch firmly to your skin with the heel of your palm for at least 10 seconds
- Wash your hands after applying or removing NicoDerm CQ
- If you crave cigarettes when you wake up or feel you need extra protection, wear the patch for 24 hours. Otherwise, take it off at bedtime and apply a fresh patch first thing in the morning.
